Can I scan exteriors with Twindo?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can capture exteriors with Twindo! Please be aware of a few differences between scanning exteriors and interiors so that you understand what is possible, and you get the results you're looking for. Exteriors are available for converting to 3D models only. We are not able to generate 2D plans or elevations for exteriors. We do not recommend using Twindo for scanning landscaping, topography, and other natural, non-structural elements you may find outdoors. Our process will reject such scans unless they are part of a structure. Only structural elements will be modeled. We do not model landscaping, topography, fences, yards, driveways, sidewalks, etc. Estimation and Pricing As our in-app square-footage estimation algorithms were built for interior scans only, if your order contains exterior scans, the in-app estimation will likely be significantly off. Actual price is calculated from total floor area of each level, as measured from the exterior sides of walls. If the space is not closed, such as a single exterior wall, the square footage of the wall(s) will be used to calculate the area processed. Sunlight interference Bright sunlight is not as much of a factor as it used to be. While many 3D sensors can struggle to varying degrees in very bright, direct sunlight, the LiDAR sensor used in Twindo-compatible devices is less sensitive than older technology. However, it is still necessary to avoid shooting directly into the sun. Range The LiDAR sensor’s range is 5m or about 16'5", meaning roofs and second-story(+) exteriors will be very challenging to capture. So if you're standing on the ground scanning up the side of a house, you could capture about 20-22' okay, but accuracy will decline as you approach the maximum end of the the range, and beyond that will be out of range and not captured. Although this is a known limitation, we have many customers who find value in scanning exteriors, even if the entire exterior can't be captured. When capturing a multistory building, you'll move around the building, using the primary "fence-painting" method capturing as high as you're able. When you're done with your scan, get the height with your LDM. Then you can provide that height as a reference measurement when you place your order, ie. "Adjust the soffit to 30 ft," and then we'll manually adjust that dimension in your model. Check out this scan where the user did just that. He scanned the exterior of the home in two separate scans, then the interior in 6 scans. We merged them together into one global model of the space, and adjusted the model manually with the height dimension he provided. Drift on Large Scans Generally, the larger an area you cover in a scan, the more small, unnoticeable measurement errors can compound, which is why Twindo states an accuracy tolerance in relative percentage terms vs. absolute terms. If you are scanning a very large side of a home, you may experience more drift (or distortion) in your model, which can affect accuracy. Make sure to follow scanning best practices. CAD Oversimplification Our conversion pipeline was built and optimized for interior scans, which means that you may find some aspects of an exterior model oversimplified compared to the level of detail provided in our interior models. We do not convert landscape, fences, driveways, grass, or other items that may be important to your project. The model we deliver will be of the structure. Accuracy If the limitations above affect the accuracy or quality of your scan data, this can lead to inaccuracies in your model. Can I submit multiple scans of an entire home?

The Short Answer Absolutely! Twindo can convert your 3D scans into editable, design-ready, and professional-grade CAD files that can either be processed individually or merged into a single, global CAD model of the entire space. Tips for scanning a whole house with Twindo: Plan your scan Scan connecting areas Scan the small nooks and crannies Very large rooms/spaces may need multiple scans You will be asked if you would like to merge additional scans during checkout The Long Answer It is very common that our customers are not just scanning a single room or rooms, but a whole home and as such, they want one CAD file of all the rooms. We can merge your scans into a single, global file. When you are placing an order, you will be asked if you want to merge your scans. Selecting "yes" means you will receive a single, global CAD file. Otherwise, each scan will be processed individually. Merging is no additional cost and you will receive something like what you see below: This model took approximately 8 scans, and was captured in roughly 20 minutes. However, depending on the space being captured, you may be able to capture it in fewer scans, or even a single scan. You can learn more about the trade-offs here: How big of a space can I scan? Scanning a whole home We recommend starting with our scanning overview and tutorial. Plan your scan: Do a walkthrough of the home to open the doors between rooms, make sure the lights are on, and turn off ceiling fans (as the fans can distort light). This will ensure the best results and likelihood of a successful merge. Do not open or close doors, turn on/off lights, open window treatments, etc. during scanning as this can negatively affect the scan quality. Scan connecting areas: Make sure to scan through connecting areas like doorways to create a common point of reference. For example, when you scan the bedroom, scan a little bit into the hallway (and the other way around) so that it's clear how they connect. Just a few seconds of scanning the adjacent room is fine. Scan all intermediate areas: Make sure to cover all the intermediate areas between rooms that connect your scans. Sometimes first-time users forget to scan a hallway or entryway, and then you'll end up with two models of separate wings of the house instead of one. Scan small nooks and crannies: This is not strictly necessary, but it's generally a better, more complete model if you scan everything for a whole home model. Capture closets, hallways, and pantries, etc. because closet depth can have an impact on how multiple rooms fit together. It's not always vital, but in some houses, it can make a difference. Very large spaces: If you are scanning a really large, open space that is too big to fit in one scan, don't be afraid to break it into multiple scans. Make sure your start and end points between scans overlap so we have the connecting reference points to merge them together. You can see more homes we have scanned here. How do I place an order for a home? When you place an order you have the option to select "merge my scans". There's no added cost and selecting this option means we will provide a single global CAD model. Can I use a third-party 3D scanner with Twindo?

Twindo uses proprietary SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technology to recreate scale-accurate 3D models of real-world spaces via mobile devices. In order to do so, Twindo needs access to raw data captured by the device itself, and its algorithms need to be tuned tightly to that device. Twindo’s Scan To CAD pipeline is itself tuned to this output (and underlying raw data) in order to automate as much of the process as possible (and keep our prices lower than manual modeling/drafting). This makes supporting any third-party scanner a significant undertaking. As of right now, Scan To CAD supports only scans captured via the Twindo iOS apps Twindo: LiDAR 3D Measurements on a compatible device.

Question 4

Can Twindo scan a space that is still under construction or partially built?

The Short Answer Twindo was not optimized for this purpose, but we do have customers that use Twindo in partial construction projects. Our Scan To CAD files will include details such as beams, framing, doors, exposed walls, along with the other included details. Projects with completely open framing can pose a challenge for scanning and processing. We recommend breaking up these types of spaces into smaller scans and focus on scanning top to bottom. Because framing boards are thin enough to potentially cause issues, please consider sending actual framing dimensions as reference information after you've placed your order. In that case, we will override the scan data for the dimension you provide, which will increase accuracy. Here are some additional scanning tips. The Long Answer We've seen customers use Twindo in partially constructed space. Here is one such example: There are a handful of things to keep in mind when using Twindo to tackle this kind of space: Sunlight Interference If the walls are not fully built and exterior-facing, you may get a lot of very bright, direct sunlight coming into the space. This can interfere with the performance of most 3D sensors. Avoid shooting directly into the sun when possible. Messy Scans If the walls are just frames, Twindo will scan into the next room, which can create a messier looking scan because it's scanning past the frames as well. Break scans up into smaller chunks scanning from top to bottom. Difficulty Tracking When the walls are just frames, Twindo's ability to track may be impaired. "Tracking" is referring to how Twindo keeps track of your movement as you scan. If Twindo struggles to maintain tracking, you may see the scan "slip" or "jitter" which can reduce accuracy in the scan and the CAD file. If you see this happen while scanning, you will likely want to start over. Scan To CAD Oversimplification Some "partially built" elements of the room might get oversimplified in CAD format vs. the scan. For example, a concrete wall that has many small depressions from damage over the years may appear as just a normal flat wall, piping, or heavy electrical wiring may not show up in your CAD file. Additionally, if frames are similar but not identical in thickness, you may find that they are oversimplified to be the same, or that the count of frames is not 100% exact. Accuracy Any of these issues can cause accuracy to be slightly worse than our typical expected tolerances, which we outline here: What kind of accuracy can I expect from Twindo? All that being said, generally, the customers that we have worked with that use Twindo for scanning partially-built or under-construction spaces have been happy with the results. More often than not, the biggest issue is keeping other people at the construction site out of the room when you're scanning! Modeling as a finished space If you'd like us to create the model or CAD as if the space was finished with drywall, flooring, ceilings, etc. we would be happy to do this for you. Please simply make a note in the reference information requesting this.

Does Twindo support AutoCAD?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can order the 2D Floor Plan package which includes a 2D AutoCAD file (.dwg). Although Twindo's 3D packages include .dwg files, these are 3D models and are not optimized for use with AutoCAD. They do not contain 2D drawings whether it be floor plans, elevations, ceiling plans, or other types of 2D documents. AutoCAD LT is unable to work with these files. What does the 2D .dwg floor plan file include? The 2D .dwg floor plan file allows for full manipulation of the file in terms of editing the drawing or changing annotations. This file comes with pre-annotated dimensions for convenience, but you may turn these off or add different ones if desired from inside AutoCAD. You can download sample files here. Units and Scale Our AutoCAD files are delivered in inches by default. If you are importing your Twindo files into AutoCAD and intend to use any other unit besides inches (even if they are within the same system of measurement, e.g. feet), you will need to rescale the units based on their relative ratio to inches. Changing the unit type in AutoCAD alone will simply change the label, not the numbers. As an example, if you import with inches (default), 10 units is 10 inches. If you change the units in AutoCAD to architectural, or metric, 10 units is now 10 feet or 10 meters and the scale is way off. How to rescale AutoCAD unit from inches to different metrics The instructions below will guide you through rescaling units in AutoCAD from inches to different metric units using the SCALE command (you can find other methods for changing units in AutoCAD in this AutoDesk support article): In the command line, enter and select “SCALE" When asked to select objects, type “all” When prompted for basepoint (on cursor), enter “0”, then “,” then “0” to set the basepoint to 0,0 Next, specify the scale using the conversion listed below and in the linked AutoDesk article: Inches to Millimeters = 25.4 Millimeters to Inches = 0.0393701 Inches to Centimeters = 2.54 Centimeters to Inches = 0.393701 Feet to Millimeters = 304.8 Millimeters to Feet = 0.00328084 Feet to Centimeters = 30.48 Centimeters to Feet = 0.0328084 *Reminder: You can choose imperial or metric in your account settings before placing an order.

How are the CAD models organized?

The Short Answer Scan To CAD files are delivered using professional-grade tagging, naming, and organization. Objects of the same type (e.g. walls, doors) will be grouped together on an appropriate layer or Tag. Software like Revit and Chief Architect will have default properties applied. Each file is fully editable allowing your to adjust to fit your workflow. We aim to organize the files to help you get the most out of your preferred CAD software, but we are not yet able to support custom templates, tagging, or naming. If you have any feedback, questions, or would like to learn more, please reach out to our support team at support@twindo.com. The Long Answer Tags (SketchUp) The number at the beginning of the named tag (e.g. 1_, 2_, 3_) will help group together items of similar stature. The number behind the name (e.g. L1, L2) will indicate what level the item is located on (first floor or second floor). Here's an example of a commonly tagged model that has two floor levels: Here is an example of disabling tags and how they can reveal/disable certain aspects: In the above image, the ceiling tag is enabled as visible; in the image below the ceiling tag is disabled (or not visible). Geometry Organization In our supported file formats, model geometry is organized so that you can work with key surfaces independently as if you had made it from scratch. This allows you to edit and manipulate the model using standard tools in that program: In Chief Architect and Revit, geometry is typically even more structured, in that walls are not just arbitrary geometry called "Wall," but an actual family or element. This is what allows for more advanced features like being able to generate construction drawings, generate cost estimates, etc. Revit and Chief Architect support in Twindo does support this added structure, but you may find that there are more fields that are empty, generic, or defaults. This is because we only have your scan data to work with, which does not capture things like wall thickness (which is assumed using construction standards) or material properties. Here are a few examples from Revit: We do aim to use best practices when organizing geometry so that it is easy to take advantage of the features people most in our supported programs, but every person's workflow is different, and we can't customize our model organization to individual workflows without very large commitments of volume. We are, however, very happy to hear your feedback and make changes that can benefit all users. How big of a space can I scan?

The Short Answer There is no specific limit on how big of a space you can scan (except for the device memory), and you can scan room by room, several rooms at once or up to a whole floor. We recommend scanning each floor separately and stairways separately. Multiple scans can be converted into a single, global model, so how you break up the scans is flexible. More information on merging scans here. The Long Answer LiDAR-enabled iPads (which include Pro models 2020 and newer) and iPhone 12 Pro/Pro Max and newer will generally allow you to scan the largest areas at once, as the Twindo app allows you to walk around as you scan. In our testing, however, the RAM of the device will tend to max out at about one floor of a typical home, so large spaces will still require breaking up into multiple scans. However, it's really more about how long it takes to scan a space, and if you're able to do so using good technique. Try to keep any scans less than about 10 minutes long. Once you start approaching 10 minutes, it's a good idea to start looking for a place to end the scan so you can start a new one. Similarly, if you're unable to scan an entire floor without sticking to our Scanning Best Practices, it's a good idea to break the floor into more than one scan. As you take Twindo into larger commercial and industrial environments, you may run into different limitations, which you can learn more about here: I want to scan non-residential spaces. Will Twindo work outside the home? The three most important things are that you: Capture all sections of the home that you expect to show up in your CAD model somewhere in your individual scans Scan through connecting areas (like doorways) into the adjacent space (if you do intend to merge it with other scans) Avoid zig-zagging in and out of many rooms in a row within a single scan

How can I generate my own 2D files from a 3D model?

If you already have a 3D CAD file, you can generate 2D floor plans yourself from your design program: SketchUp Open the .skp file in SketchUp. Using SketchUp's instructions here, use the slicing plane to slice through the model horizontally: https://help.sketchup.com/en/sketchup/slicing-model-peer-inside Go to Camera &#8211;> Standard Views &#8211;> Top Go to Camera &#8211;> check "Parallel Projection" instead of Perspective Go to Tools &#8211;> Dimensions, and then touch the points for which you want measurements displayed. With Apple's LiDAR sensor, 3D scanning can be as easy as taking a video. The video below will outline our recommended scanning methods to help you get the best results each time. LiDAR iPad and iPhone Start in a corner of the room with a lot of details (book shelf, picture frames, patterns) Stand 5-10ft away, aim the iPad at the detailed corner and tap Scan to start (scanning with the device "sideways" in landscape orientation works best). Tip: Standing back can help Twindo keep better track of your position in the room. Move the iPad slowly up (or down) to the ceiling. You do not need to scan the entire ceiling or the entire floor. Take 1-2 steps to either side, and scan back down (or up) the wall to the floor As if you are spraying paint on the wall, continue with this pattern moving in one single direction Scan the perimeter walls until you are back at your starting point Tap Done to complete the scan Tips for best results: Avoid moving or pivoting without continuing the "fence painting" pattern Only scan up to one floor at a time, do not go up or down stairs Try not to capture anything more than once in a single scan In tight spaces like halls or stairways, try using the "J" scanning pattern shown in our scanning best practices

All orders are priced per square foot (or per square meter), and pricing for Essentials members starts at $0.14/sqft for 2D floor plans ($10 minimum/order) and $0.23/sqft for 3D models/reports ($20 minimum/order). How ordering, estimates and as-built pricing works When you place an order, you select the format(s) you need and the delivery type, and apply any discounts. The area of each scan is estimated, and you receive an estimated price range for the order. Your model, report, and/or floor plan is created. The actual square footage of the model is measured which determines the actual cost of the order. The order is delivered, and the payment method is charged. *Important notes* Our estimates are only estimates, and the price of your order will be calculated based on the actual square footage of the model and charged at delivery. The actual square footage is calculated from the total floor area of each level, as measured from the exterior sides of the walls. If a space is not closed, for example, if your order only contains a single wall, the square footage of the processed wall(s) will be used to calculate the cost. Our in-app square-footage estimation algorithms were built for interior scans, so if your order contains exterior scans, the in-app estimation will likely be significantly off. But remember, you are not charged the estimate, nor do you pay at ordering. You are charged the actual price at delivery. Estimates will include overlapping areas, but duplicated areas will only be charged once. How is my scan data secured?

Twindo is most often used to capture personal and private spaces. Whether it’s your own home, a client’s home, or a secure commercial facility, we know that security and privacy are at the top of our customers’ mind. As such, we place the utmost importance on both security and transparency about how your data is handled. We have detailed answers to common questions below, but overall we follow three basic principles: Your data is never uploaded without an opt-in action. Your data is only ever “touched” when necessary to help serve you. Your data is your data. You may also be interested in reading our latest terms of service and privacy policy. Where is my data stored? All scan data is by default only stored on your device. If you do not explicitly choose to upload your scan data, it will never hit our servers in any way. Any uploaded data is transferred with secure HTTPS connections via our secure cloud infrastructure using modern encryption technologies. The data itself is stored on U.S. servers using Amazon Web Services (AWS), a leading provider of cloud infrastructure which itself applies its own additional encryption and security practices. How long is my data stored? We do not currently automatically delete data from our servers, so that customers can continue to retrieve data from old orders as well as add on to existing spaces. Abiding by the principle of “Your data is your data,” we are always happy to honor deletion requests for any uploaded data as well as GDPR forget-me requests, with the sole exception of orders opted into our Research Opt-In Program. If you would like to request the removal of any uploaded data, please reach out to support@twindo.com. Who can access my data and for what purposes? In short, absolutely no one at Twindo accesses customer scan data unless they are actively processing a Scan to CAD order, reviewing your order to provide technical support, or in aggregate to improve our products and services. If you have not uploaded your data, it is only on your device, never touches our servers, and there is no way for anyone to access your data. When scans are uploaded to our servers to store in your online account or to place a Scan To CAD order, a Twindo Web Viewer link (URL) is created for that scan. Link sharing is disabled by default and only visible to you. You can turn link sharing on and off. If you want to share the link with your collaborators, from the app or your account, tap the “Share” button, and enable Link Sharing. Then copy and share the link as you choose. Your collaborators will have access to your scan until you disable Link Sharing for that scan. If you place an order, there is human involvement in the processing of your data, as Scan To CAD is a semi-automated pipeline that includes a mix of both automated computer vision technology as well as human operators. The majority of the work is done by software to recreate your space and generate CAD geometry, with highly trained human operators using specialized tools overseeing the process — ensuring the files you get back are design-ready and professional-grade for your chosen file format. All Scan To CAD orders are processed by our dedicated team, who only have access to data for the duration and purpose of order processing under tightly controlled conditions. No details about your scans or orders will be shared with anybody outside your organization. If anybody (including yourself) reaches out from an email address that is not associated with your account, we will not share any information with them until we receive approval from an email address associated with your account either by directly matching that email address, or sharing a unique domain in the address. How long will it take to receive my order?

The time it takes to receive your order can vary based on several factors, especially the size of the space. Our delivery estimates are not guarantees, but these are our averages: Standard delivery Up to 1,000 sqft ~2 business days 1,001-2,000 sqft ~3 business days 2,001-3,000 sqft ~4 business days 3,001-4,000 sqft ~5 business days 4,001-5,000 sqft ~6 business days 5,001-8,000 sqft ~7 business days Above 8,000 sqft 7+ business days (Please contact Customer Success at support@twindo.com for a more precise estimate) Please note: Certain orders are more likely to vary from the above estimates, including larger spaces, more complex spaces, non-residential spaces and orders including exterior scans. Multi-Format Orders When you place a multi-format order (for example, Revit and SketchUp), the processing time will be the sum of all the formats you ordered. For example, if your scan is 750 square feet and you've ordered two formats, your estimated processing time will be four business days (2 days X 2 formats). If your scan is 1,500 square feet and you've ordered 3 formats, your order will be delivered in approximately 9 business days (3 days X 3 formats). When you rush a multi-format order, your turnaround time will also be multiplied by the number of formats you're ordering. For example, if you rush a 750 square foot order for two formats, your estimated delivery time will be 48 hours (and your rush fee will not be waived unless this time is exceeded). *What is a business day? Our business days are Monday through Friday, not including holidays. However, we do maintain some weekend and holiday capacity, so you may occasionally see orders delivered on weekends. Order delivery times are provided based on your local time zone, with a cut-off of 6pm. This means that if an order is submitted after 6pm in your device’s time zone, the estimated turnaround time will commence from the following business day at 8am. As an example, a 500 square foot order submitted at 4pm on Wednesday should generally be delivered on Friday (+2 days from Wednesday), but a 4,000 square foot order submitted at 9pm on Friday should generally be delivered on the following Friday (+4 days from the following Monday).

How will I know if the Twindo files will work for my software?

I need a 2D floor plan. Do you produce these?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Twindo's 2D floor plans are $0.18/sqft and you'll receive an editable 2D AutoCAD file (.dwg) and editable 2D Revit file (.rvt), and a PDF file with annotated dimensions, which is easy to open and share. Please note: These are all 2D files. These 2D files are only floor plans; they do not include 2D elevations. 2D floor plan orders do not include any 3D information, and 3D outputs do not include a 2D floor plan. If you would like to receive both a 3D model and a 2D floor plan, please choose both formats during ordering. 2D files are not available to order for exteriors. We follow the US architectural standard of setting a "cut plane" at 48" above the finish floor when drafting 2D orders. This means that any details above the 48" cut plane will not be included. However, we are able to include high windows above this cut plane upon request. To request this when placing your order, please use the "Add Additional Information" button which appears after your order has been placed to add a note saying: "please include any high windows over 48 inches." You can also create 2D floor plans from Twindo's 3D files if you work in these 3D software design programs, or from the 3D scan (.obj) itself. I need higher accuracy than 1-2%. Can I submit my own dimensions to improve accuracy?

Accepted Answer

The Short Answer On its own, using Twindo with a LiDAR-enabled device will yield accuracy tolerances of within 1-2% of manually verified dimensions. This is largely a function of the devices themselves, and you can read more about expected tolerances here: What kind of accuracy can I expect from Twindo? If you require a higher degree of accuracy for specific critical dimensions, you may always send in manually-verified field measurements to accompany your order. This will "override" the scan for the measurements provided (where possible), and use the scan data for the rest. You may submit reference dimensions/materials either in the app or through the web portal using the "Add Additional Information" button which appears after your order has been placed. Wait until your order has fully uploaded, then submit the information as soon as possible: within 8 hours for a standard job or within 2 hours for a rush job. The Long Answer Reference Material Accuracy Please note that when measurements are provided for incorporation into your order, we rely fully on both the accuracy of your measurements and the readability of your reference material. If the measurements provided are themselves inaccurate, or it's unclear what they refer to, this can lead to inaccuracies in your files or additional questions and revisions which delay your order. While we always will make our best effort to bridge the gap with you, we can not guarantee that all dimensions will precisely match. In the rare case that reference material varies significantly from the scan, we will be unable to override the data from the scan without risking introducing significantly larger errors. This threshold is 6" for measurements under 300", and 12" for measurements above 300". Scaling The dimensions you provide are not used to "scale" the rest of the model, and are instead solely used to override that particular measurement from the scan. Error in 3D scanning is not uniform, so scaling all dimensions according to a single or few reference dimensions will not always make other dimensions more accurate. However, providing reference dimensions does have the effect of controlling error during the process and producing a more accurate overall model. Guidelines For Submitting Manual Measurements You may submit text notes, a photo or a drawing with manual measurements. For a drawing, please follow these guidelines: Your verified dimensions must be annotated in clear and legible text or handwriting, using English characters. Imperial or metric units are both acceptable; please denote which you are using. The start and endpoint for any dimension must be clear and unambiguous from the drawing, and not rely on "industry-standard" assumptions (e.g., does a door opening dimension include the casing around it or not &#8211; these vary significantly across industries). Send your drawing as an image or PDF — if you send another file type, it may not be accepted or it may require additional time to triage. A digital drawing is preferred, but a photo of a hand drawing is also acceptable if the photo is clear and readable. Here is an example of a totally acceptable drawing submitted by a customer with their order as extra reference:

I want to scan non-residential environments. Will Twindo work outside of the home?

Accepted Answer

The Short Answer Twindo was purpose-built and optimized for scanning residential environments. We've seen many customers use it successfully and regularly across all kinds of spaces (including residential, retail, commercial, industrial, and even archaeological!), but you may run into certain limitations using Twindo outside of its intended purpose. It’s important to note that there is nothing within the app that will prevent you from scanning non-residential spaces and requesting their conversion into CAD files via Scan To CAD. However, we recommend reading this FAQ in full to set your expectations appropriately and approaching your use case with an experimental spirit, as there may be a few aspects of using Twindo that require more attention or workarounds. We are unfortunately unable to model or draft any portion of any type of vehicle, interior or exterior. As always, if you have any questions about using Twindo for a particular project or industry, simply send us an email at support@twindo.com. The Long Answer Using Twindo to scan non-residential buildings is very possible, and we see it all the time. However, depending on your use case, you may run into some limitations. Here are a few known limitations that we've encountered. Scanning range Apple's LiDAR sensor has a range of 5m (15ft). Given that you can walk around a space as you scan, these range limits are generally only an issue when capturing certain elements or environments like: Tall ceilings (e.g. warehouses) and any relevant details on or near them (windows, beams, etc) Tall structures or equipment (e.g. tanks) These circumstances don’t happen often in a home, but in commercial and industrial environments, they are more common. Size Across the case studies we've run with professionals out in the field — using Twindo and Scan To CAD on real-world projects — we see that most measurements in the final CAD file generated are within 1-2% of what's verified manually by tape measure, laser range-finder, or existing blueprint. You can read more about Twindo and accuracy here. In a very large commercial or industrial space, that relative error can add up to much larger absolute errors. It can also require more scans, which can be more error-prone to merge together depending on the available reference. Of course, these challenges (cost and accuracy) are present when measuring large spaces the old fashion way as well! Highly reflective, transparent, or dark surfaces Such surfaces can cause issues with most kinds of 3D sensors. In a home, this typically is limited to things like bathroom mirrors and reflective kitchen appliances, but it's easy to scan around them (or they’re small enough that they have a negligible impact). In commercial and industrial environments, there may be more transparent, metallic, or reflective objects, and you may find the model "slips" more while scanning or creates errors in the scan. Lighting Twindo works best when there are lots of “features” in the scene — fixtures, windows, doors, patterns, etc. This is why Twindo can struggle if you get too close to a wall: the only thing it sees is blank white for many frames in a row during your scan, and it loses track of where you are. Low or no lighting can have a similar effect in that these details are difficult to discern, and Twindo has trouble maintaining tracking of where you are in the scan you’re creating. In many industrial environments, adequate lighting can be a challenge. If you plan on scanning in dark environments, we recommend setting up a few lights to help illuminate the space and avoid moving shadows. CAD over-simplification Scan To CAD is highly optimized for residential environments, so you may find equipment or features only common in commercial or industrial spaces are over-simplified or missed entirely. Subtle details such as a control panel’s knobs and switches will likely not be included, but as a general layout of what’s in the scene and where, Scan To CAD usually provides more than enough information. A common question we receive is if Twindo and Scan To CAD can capture and process piping or conveyor belts. Twindo does capture this information in the scan, but they are often missed or simplified (beyond the level needed for commercial or industrial applications) by our standard Scan To CAD pipeline and require extra human effort and/or be less precise. Further, they can often be difficult to scan properly because it can be difficult to follow our recommended scanning techniques with lots of equipment or pipes in the way. Vehicles, etc. Twindo is purpose-built for residential interiors and not for vehicles, boats, RV's, or similar objects. In the past, we have attempted to convert these types of spaces for convenience, but ultimately, we've found there is oversimplification and the resulting CAD files do not convey the nuanced details or curves that are expected. These conversions are also often very dependent on manual modeling which Scan To CAD is not priced for. As such, we no longer convert these objects to CAD and the scans will be rejected from our Scan To CAD process. However, you can certainly scan vehicles, and more, with Twindo. The scan can be viewed, measured and shared, and you can export it as an .OBJ file- all at no cost.

Is my scan done uploading? It looks stuck.

Most scans have no trouble uploading and the vast majority should complete within 20 minutes. In some cases, however, they get stuck. If it has been more than 24 hours since you started your upload, we first recommend force quitting Twindo, restarting your device, then re-opening the Twindo app. This usually does the trick for uploads that get "stuck", but if the upload does not resume and finish within 2 hours, let us know at support@twindo.com so we can help you resolve the issue. Again, it's important to keep the Twindo app open and connected to wi-fi to allow the upload to complete.

What details are included with my CAD file?

Twindo processes your 3D scan data into scale-accurate, simplified geometry that's easy to use in various CAD programs like SketchUp, Revit, Chief Architect, Archicad, Vectorworks, 2020 Design Live, AutoCAD and more. The intent is to provide a "blank slate" of the space with a reasonable level of detail for design, quoting, and documentation. This means we not only try to include the basics like walls, doors, and windows, but also baseboards, crown molding, light switches, ceiling lights, and other details that are both built-in and affect the utilization of the space. Some built-in detail such as fireplaces may be simplified due to the nature of our conversion process. This especially applies when using Twindo in non-residential spaces. Any “movable” furniture (e.g. chairs, tables, TV’s&#8230;etc) will not be included in your model. However, the dimensional information will still be in your scan, so you can always revisit the scan when needed in-app or via the Twindo Web Viewer. For those familiar with BIM level of detail standards, our output is targeted at a AIA LOD 200. *** Please note that details differ between the various software programs we support. The Long Answer There are some differences between the features included with 2D plans and 3D files as noted below: 3D files (interior details) Walls Doors and door casing HVAC vents* Windows and window casing* Crown molding, baseboards, trim (interior) Ceiling details (e.g. vaulted, exposed beams, coffers)* Ceiling lighting* Beams, columns, kitchen islands Cabinets, countertops, and other casework Major and/or built-in appliances (e.g. toilets) Staircases and railing Fireplaces Electrical outlets and light switches 2D floor plans Annotated dimensions for key elements (you can download a sample 2D floor plan here). Walls Windows* that begin below 48" from floor (not including casing) Doors (measured as the opening only, not including casing, and inclusive of door direction) Floor-mounted casework (e.g., countertops) Floor-mounted major and/or built-in appliances Steps with direction Columns and kitchen islands For any included detail, we are using standardized geometry and components, meaning that these details will not always match exact detail. *May be difficult to scan completely or discern from a scan in certain scenarios (i.e., the window is covered by blinds), and occasionally assumptions have to be made. In general, we can only process what can be seen clearly in the scan. It’s important to us that you’re happy and satisfied with your model, so we will also cover details that are not included (we want to prevent any surprises!). Not Included Ceiling fans Furniture Fixtures that are not permanently attached to the framing of the building— for example, many organization solutions are custom built for a specific closet, but they are not permanently built-in to the structure of the building. These would be omitted. A good rule of thumb is that if demolition of the existing building or facade would not be required to remove it, it's not considered permanent. Fixtures that are movable. For example, entertainment centers, desks, or bookshelves would not be included. Notes you made on your scan in Twindo Curtains Details inside walls like frames (unless exposed — Twindo cannot scan through walls!) 2D plans will not include outlets or objects (such as windows and wall-mounted furniture) more than 48" above the floor Note there are differences between the various software programs we support. Test our sample files for more information. Equipment, Piping, etc. Twindo was built for residential projects, but commercial and industrial spaces can also be processed with some caveats. In non-residential spaces, customers often ask about equipment, piping, and other features that are not common in homes. Although not guaranteed (as the list of included details above is), as a rule, we try to over-include vs. under-include. Our system will generally pick up anything that it perceives as "built-in" and structural — regardless of whether it's a residential item or not. So items like piping may or may not be included in a simplified, proxy form. You can learn more at: I want to scan non-residential environments. Will Twindo work outside of the home? Ornate, Complex, and Organic Shapes In some cases, organic shapes or extremely ornate or non-traditional components of a room may get simplified due to the nature of the conversion process. In these cases, your colorized scan may be useful as it will preserve all the detail that was scanned. Converting this detail into CAD format would be extremely manual, and we would have to charge a lot more to convert this more photo-realistically. If you have a custom scale plan with us, there may be objects that fall outside of our standard included details, or higher level of detail available to you. It&#8217;s really a matter of personal choice, as there&#8217;s no discernible differences between the scans from these devices. The iPhones are good choices for those who don&#8217;t want to carry an additional device. The iPad is a good choice if you want a bigger screen or more than one person will be scanning. Depending on your phone plan, and if you&#8217;re due for an upgrade, the iPhone may or may not be less expensive than the iPad. WiFi vs. Cell You do not need to be connected to the internet to scan; you only need to connect when you&#8217;re ready to upload scans/place orders. So, WiFi vs. cell is completely up to you and your workflow! Storage Storage refers to the amount of data your device can hold at one time. When using Twindo, it affects the number of scans or homes you can hold on the device at one time. The base storage capacity for most of these devices is 128GB which is more than enough storage for Twindo, but a higher capacity may be necessary depending on what else you store on the device. Generally speaking, this is very rarely a practical concern for our customers, unless you use the device to store a lot of videos or audio files in addition to scans. While the total storage footprint for a home can range given the size of the home, in our experience, the average typically ranges from 500MB to 1GB, with exceptionally large homes and projects taking up to 5 GB of space. On a 128GB device with ~60GB free, someone could still hold many homes before needing to free up space. On a 256GB or larger device, storage should effectively stop being a practical consideration. If you regularly capture large multi-floor or commercial properties, uploading scans as you go rather than accumulating them on-device is the simplest way to keep space free. What about non-LiDAR iPhones or Android? Twindo is currently only compatible with iOS devices, and specifically the LiDAR-enabled devices listed above. The Viewer is an easy way to view, measure, and share your scans or CAD models.. With the Viewer, you can: Virtually revisit the space Measure the scan or CAD file directly in your browser View notes and measurements created in-app Share with collaborators or clients Embed into your web page You can access the viewer directly from the app or Web. Accessing the Viewer You can access the Viewer on device by tapping a scan in the App or by clicking on a scan’s Viewer link on Twindo Web. Share You can share the Viewer with customers, contractors, subcontractors, owners, or anyone else you choose. You can share this in two ways. Invite to Capture (link). Collaborators will be able to view and add scans, photos, field notes, and PDFs. They will also be able to download any assets tied to the project, including the converted model. However, they will not be able to view order details or pricing for the project. Share individual Viewer links. In their web browser, users can view your scan and as-built, see notes, and take measurements. Two important notes: 1. If the scan hasn't been uploaded yet, you'll need to upload before sharing. 2. Sharing is off by default when just sharing individual Viewer links. Once Link Sharing is enabled, the Viewer link will be accessible to users. If you would like your scan to remain private, you can leave or toggle Link Sharing OFF. When this setting is OFF, the link to the scan is only accessible to you when you are logged in to your account. To share: tap the three dots on the top right of the scan's thumbnail to get to the scan information. Clipping Tool To make it easier to view CAD files in the Twindo Viewer. We’ve included a clipping tool that snaps to important CAD elements (ceilings, windows, doors, etc) to make viewing different floors and elements simple. Just click and drag. You can toggle the clipping tool on and off in the settings menu (gear icon) at the bottom right. Measure With the measuring tool (top right corner), click the first point then move your cursor to the second point and get an instant measurement. Zoom in by clicking and holding. Hold "Shift" key to lock measurement to X-axis, Y-axis, or Z-axis. Since measuring precise points on the 3D mesh can sometimes be difficult, we try to help speed up certain measurements. If you touch two opposing walls, the measure tool will "snap" to the straight, perpendicular distance between those two walls even if you didn't touch the exact right points. If you touch anywhere on the floor and then anywhere on the ceiling, the same thing will happen. For more complicated measurements, you can always use the normal point to point measurement feature. You can turn off "snapping" by clicking the "Planar" toggle. The second button under the ruler (the square) allows you to trace a space for a quick area calculation. Link Sharing You can change the webviewer link-sharing settings using the Twindo (formerly Canvas) app or your Twindo.com account portal. This allows you to share links with your clients and colleagues and to enable/disable access for anyone with the link as needed. What kind of accuracy can I expect from Twindo?

When using our Scanning Best Practices in Twindo: 3D LiDAR Measurements with your LiDAR-enabled iPad or iPhone (includes most Pro models launched since 2020), most measurements in your CAD file should be within 1-2% of what's verified manually with a tape measure, laser distance meter, or existing blueprint. You can learn more about compatible devices here: What device should I use with Twindo? For more information about our recommended capture techniques, please see our Scanning Best Practices. The accuracy of mobile 3D scanning depends a lot on the user and the environment, so unfortunately, an absolute tolerance, e.g., "all measurements ever will always be within X millimeters," can't be provided. A football field will have more absolute error than a kitchen, as will a hall of mirrors. Overall, most of our customers find that Twindo is an effective, powerful, and out-of-the-box solution for things like design, planning, pricing, estimation, sales, or documentation conditions (at the beginning of the project or as an ongoing thing). If you're looking to use Twindo for installation and construction projects that require extremely tight tolerances, you may want to verify the any critical measurements you need manually, and use the "Additional Information" button to relay these measurements to us with your order. We find that this typically still creates a large ROI, as most projects only have a few measurements that really need to be millimeter-level precise, and Twindo still automates all the other measurements and creates the 3D model. So, what can I expect in terms of hard numbers? Across the case studies we've run with professionals out in the field — using Twindo on real-world projects — we see that most measurements in the final CAD file generated are within 1-2% of what's verified manually by tape measure, laser range-finder, or existing blueprint. Some of the dimensions in my final CAD model exceed the expected variance. Why? Normally, accuracy tolerances outside of this range are simply because we received a poor scan, which in turn was because of poor scanning technique (such as moving or pivoting about without using our "fence painting" pattern), poor calibration, or other first-time user mistakes we call out in our scanning tutorial video. We always recommend scanning a few rooms around your own house to understand how Twindo handles different kinds of environments before you take it on a job site. Depending on the scan, we may need to make assumptions where the 3D sensor on your device does not directly observe the dimension in question. For example, if curtains cover a window, Twindo will typically interpret that there is indeed a window behind the curtains, but the curtains may cover the outer dimensions, so its placement within the wall may be less accurate. An even more common example is wall, floor, and ceiling thickness: Twindo does not observe these directly, so we use the scan data and construction standards to determine the dimension . A 1" difference in wall thickness accuracy could add up to be a lot more across the length of an entire building. You may also find that smaller dimensions (such as those under one foot) may have slightly wider variances than 1-2% because even being 1/16th of an inch off may be larger than 2%, and sub-inch precision is simply going to be hard to maintain consistently through the simplification process of Twindo. For example, wall thickness may come in at 4.5", but in reality, it is 4.625" — this is only a 1/8th of an inch difference, but it is a 3% error. Some kinds of environments can be a little harder to scan in general — such as a completely empty space with no furnishing and nothing on the wall (i.e., nothing for the sensor to track against), or a room with a lot of very large mirrors — and may lead to slightly wider tolerances. We recommend reading: I want to scan non-residential environments. Will Twindo work outside the home? Can Twindo scan a space that is partially built or under construction? Finally, it is important to note that humans can make mistakes too! We have debugged many orders where someone was certain that our measurements were inaccurate, but it turns out that someone had their laser range-finder against the wrong surface, or made a typo, or some other issue that had nothing to do with the scans. If you have questions or concerns about a recent Twindo order, please email support@twindo.com. What if I need better accuracy? If you need tighter tolerances than 1-2%, you can submit manually verified dimensions for key measurements, and we will "override" the scan's dimensions with your own, and you will receive a CAD model that uses the dimensions you provided us. This is a great option if you need to get a 3D model of an entire room or home, but only a few dimensions are critical. We work hard to ensure every resulting CAD file is accurate to the space scanned, but it's possible that an error might occur at some point in the process — either during your scan, or during its conversion to CAD. In the case that you find an error in your CAD model, just email support at support@twindo.com and we’ll attempt to resolve it. We can’t fix every problem, but we’ll do our best! Before emailing in, we recommend: Watch the video below to understand scanning best practices. In most cases, issues with the model are related to topics covered in this video — getting too close, rescanning areas repeatedly, scanning moving objects, etc. Ensure that you are on the latest version of the Twindo app and iOS If the above doesn't help, please contact support@twindo.com and include the Order ID as well as photos of the problematic area. If the issue is related to accuracy, please include the measurements you are specifically comparing. This will help us short-circuit a few rounds of Q&A and get your model fixed ASAP! If accuracy issues are larger than 5", supplemental scans may be needed to revise the CAD. Once a revision exceeds 5", it can affect neighboring spaces, interfering with other measurements that we took from the scan.

What units does Twindo use, and how can I change this?

The Short Answer The Twindo app will show measurements in imperial units by default, but this can be changed in-app or through your Twindo account portal. Likewise, the default units for Twindo files (.rvt, .skp, .plan, .pls, .vwx, .kit, .dwg, or .dae) will be delivered in imperial, however, changing the units in-app or through your Account Portal will change the change the units your CAD files are delivered in. This will only change the units for future orders, so if you have an older order, or an order that is in progress, please contact support@twindo.com and we'll be happy to change those units for you. If you are importing the .obj file of the scan into another 3D program, the default scale is meters. However, different 3D programs have different conventions for how they import .obj files, so you may need to adjust the import settings and/or contact the support team for that particular software to ensure scale is maintained. The Long Answer Twindo will show measurements in imperial (feet and inches) units by default, but the in-app measurements can be easily converted to metric (meters and centimeters). Likewise, changing the units in-app or through your Twindo Account Portal will change your default CAD file units. Why couldn't my scan be processed?

The Short Answer While very rare, we are occasionally unable to process a scan submitted through Scan To CAD. This normally relates to one of the following: A scan of an object A scan of a vehicle or boat Environment (e.g. scanning in a very dark place, or in a commercial kitchen with a lot of stainless steel) Scans that aren't of a complete room or are missing crucial information (e.g. partial scans, scans of open spaces, vehicles) Poor quality scans If a scan can not be processed, it will be “rejected” and you will not be charged for that scan. We will also contact you with more information about what happened, but in most cases, the space will need to be rescanned. The Long Answer In most cases, scans are good for Scan To CAD processing. If a scan is unable to be processed, it is likely do to one of the following common reasons: Poor Scan Quality If a scan is too messy or distorted to process, it may be rejected. This can occur for reasons such as: Re-scanning the same area over and over again Zig-zagging around the space vs. following our recommended scanning technique Fingers or other objects covering the camera Scanning too close or too far away from objects and surfaces Poor or no lighting Moving objects, people, or shadows It is very rare that a scan is so poor it can’t be processed at all, but it does happen from time to time. If you receive this rejection reason, you can always contact support@twindo.com to find out more and ways to help improve your scan quality. Partial Spaces In order to create a model and correctly charge for it, we need to know where to start and end modeling. Since models are 3D, we need boundaries to know where to start and stop in the left-right, forward-backward, and up-down directions. In 2D formats we need boundaries left-right, and forward-backward. If we're unable to determine some kind of boundary such as a wall, window, door, etc., your order may be rejected. Non-Room Scans While Scan To CAD does process and includes many architectural details, it is not designed to process and convert objects into CAD files. Scans of objects (e.g., furniture, people, vehicles) will be rejected. We encourage you to reach out to support@twindo.com if you’re unsure.
